What is 5G Network - Advantages and Disadvantages?

Technology - The 5G network is a fifth generation cellular network that offers higher internet speeds than the previous generation, namely 4G. 5G networks promise speeds that can put mobile internet on par with Wi-Fi. Technologically, this network is an evolution of our current cellular technology.

What is 5G Technology?
5G network technology is the fifth generation cellular network technology which offers higher internet speeds up to 20 times faster than the previous generation. 5G network technology promises users speeds that can make mobile internet equivalent to Wi-Fi.

5G technology was discovered by Michael Lemke, a German national and also a physicist who holds a PhD (doctorate). This research began in 2016, precisely at Dresden University of Technology, Germany. Apart from that, he also holds an important position at one of the well-known cellular brands, namely Huawei, as a senior technology expert. For 24 years he has been involved in the world of communications technology.

Advantages of 5G Technology
The 5G network has made quite a big contribution to the progress of communication technology, so there are several advantages of this technology, namely:
  • Wider connections. Even though they both use OFDM, 5G technology offers advantages over LTE which only has subcarrier spacing of up to 15 kHz. 5G technology has a large capacity, up to 100 times, so it can adapt to various devices. So, more and more smart-based devices can connect and adapt to the 5G network.
  • Has almost no delay. 5G technology has almost no delay like previous generations. Where the 5G network has a delay time of only around 4 to 5 milliseconds. In fact, the delay time can be up to 1 millisecond, making it possible for 5G technology users to watch high-resolution videos without buffering.
  • Energy saving. 5G technology was born to reduce energy consumption. Where the ability to reduce energy consumption by 10% by reducing data traffic. Super fast data transmission speeds also make the biggest contribution to creating energy-saving technology.
Disadvantages of 5G Technology
Apart from having advantages, 5G technology also has several disadvantages, namely:
  • Full radio frequency. Of course, if the presence of a 5G network of 6 GHz will cause problems because the radio frequency bands are already full.
  • Privacy and security. With its ease and speed in transferring high-quality data, it cannot be denied that it will cause vulnerabilities in the security level of 5G technology.
  • Minimal penetrating power. Even though 5G technology has a wider connection, its penetrating power is still minimal. Unlike previous generations, 5G networks are less than optimal for penetrating barriers such as buildings, walls, concrete and trees.
Difference between 4G and 5G
4G networks are the fourth generation of wireless technology using radio towers to deliver wireless telephone and internet services to mobile devices, offering higher speeds. While 5G networks build on 4G wireless networks, 5G also brings new technology and a wider range of radio frequencies. 5G towers and transmitters use more antennas and higher frequency radio bands resulting in faster speeds and response times

Looking at capacity, in more densely populated locations, 5G is ten times faster than 4G, reaching average speeds of almost 500 Mbps. That's a very big difference compared to 4G which has a range of 30 Mbps. Under normal conditions, 4G has a maximum speed of up to 100 Mbps, while 5G reaches 10 Gbps.

Looking at availability, 4G networks are available pretty much everywhere - except for remote areas and rural communities with limited mobile access, while 5G coverage is currently limited to cities and towns.
