  • Influenza or flu
    The most common rainy season disease is flu. This disease is caused by influenza viruses types A, B, or C. Influenza viruses can spread through coughing, sneezing, or from touching contaminated objects. Even though flu is common and can heal on its own, you still have to be aware of this disease. The reason is, some people can suffer complications from influenza such as pneumonia. 

  • Threat of Diarrhea
    Diarrhea is a disease characterized by watery feces excreted and defecation frequency that is more frequent than usual. The most common bacteria that cause diarrhea include rotavirus, shigella, E. coli, cryptosporidium, and so on. This disease can range from a mild and temporary condition, to life-threatening. 

  • Typhoid fever (typhus)
    Typhoid fever, or better known as typhus, is a contagious infection caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi or Salmonella paratyphi. These bacteria spread through contaminated food or drink. If not treated immediately, sufferers can experience complications such as pneumonia, pleurisy, myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), acute heart failure, and even death. 

  • Dengue hemorrhagic fever
    DHF or dengue hemorrhagic fever is a type of rainy season infectious disease caused by the Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes. Dengue fever is called a “break-bone” disease because it sometimes causes joint and muscle pain where the bones feel like they are cracking. Severe dengue fever, or also known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause serious bleeding, a sudden drop in blood pressure (shock), and even death.

  • Dangers of Malaria
    Malaria is a dangerous disease caused by infection with the plasmodium parasite which is transmitted through the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. Transmission of this disease usually increases during the rainy season and continues afterward. If not treated immediately, malaria can develop and pose a risk to the life of the person experiencing it. Malaria especially needs to be watched out for in eastern areas of Indonesia such as the provinces of Maluku, North Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua and West Papua.

  • Leptospirosis
    Leptospirosis is an infection caused by spiral-shaped bacteria called Leptospira interrogans. This rainy season disease is "quite popular" in Indonesia, usually known as rat urine disease. You can get this disease from touching soil or water, wet soil, or plants contaminated by the urine of infected animals. Apart from mice, the animals that most often transmit leptospirosis are cows, pigs, dogs, reptiles and amphibians, and other rodents.

High fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, red eyes, chills, sore calf muscles, and stomach ache are symptoms that mark this disease. In certain cases, this disease can cause liver problems, kidney failure, meningitis, and even respiratory failure.

Every year there are always various kinds of diseases that can appear during the rainy season. From the simple to the extreme, there are some. Of course you don't want these diseases to interfere with your activities. So, therefore, let's look at the following 10 diseases during the rainy season. There are prevention tips too. 1. Threat of Cholera
Cholera is an infectious disease that attacks the digestive tract and intestines. This disease is caused by Vibrio Cholerae bacteria which contaminate food or drink. This disease, which can attack anyone, if not managed properly, can cause vomiting and watery diarrhea which can also cause dehydration. The initial symptoms of this disease are vomiting, increased heart rate, muscle cramps, and dryness.

Tips for you to avoid contracting this disease are to ensure that the food and drinks you consume are always clean, cover open food with plastic wrap, pay attention to cleanliness indoors and outdoors, including avoiding littering.

2. Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a disease that usually attacks tropical countries. This rainy season is the right time for mosquitoes to breed. Dengue fever is transmitted by the female Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which can also cause Zika fever and yellow fever. The initial symptoms of this disease are high fever, skin rash, joint and muscle pain, stomach ache, vomiting and nose bleeding.

Tips for you: Close pools of water that are breeding grounds for mosquitoes, don't throw dirt or anything in the gutter that can cause stagnant water, empty objects such as flower vases must be cleaned so they don't become mosquito nests. Then you can use burnt or topical mosquito repellent to avoid mosquito bites.

3. Malaria Potential
Malaria is different from Dengue Fever. Malaria is a disease carried by Anopheles mosquitoes infected with the plasmodium parasite. If you are bitten by this mosquito, the parasites in the mosquito will be carried into the liver and reproduce. Then it will enter the circulatory system again and infect red blood cells. Symptoms of this disease include fever, nausea, diarrhea and anemia, if not treated properly it can be fatal.

Tips for you: Sleep under a mosquito net, wear closed clothes before going to bed, and rub or burn mosquito repellent. If you want to travel to a place where malaria is endemic, you can consult a doctor to get malaria medication.

4. Bacterial Infection - Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that is often transmitted through exposure to floodwater infected urine or feces of infected animals, usually rodents. You may also be infected with this disease by consuming contaminated food and water. Symptoms of this disease include fever, red eyes, muscle aches, headaches, and low urine output. In severe cases this disease can cause kidney failure.

Tips for you: Avoid soaking or swimming in flooded areas, wear a handkerchief and boots if necessary, control rodents in the house, and maintain cleanliness.

5. Threat of Influenza
Influenza or flu is a common disease that attacks the respiratory system, caused mostly by viruses. Everyone can easily get this disease when the seasons change. This disease can trigger headaches, coughs & colds, sore throats and fatigue.

Tips for you: Drink lots of water, get more rest, take paracetamol for fever, distance yourself from people who have the flu, and wash your hands often.

6. Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a disease caused by a virus that affects the liver and causes inflammation. This disease can be transmitted through consuming food and water contaminated with human feces and urine from an infected patient. Signs that may indicate this disease are abdominal discomfort, fever, fatigue, dark urine and jaundice. This disease is classified as curable with or without treatment. However, you must remain alert.

Tips for you: Maintain cleanliness and store food and drinks properly

7. Typhus Typhus
is a very contagious disease caused by Salmonella Typhi, bacteria that are transmitted by consuming food and water contaminated with human waste. The disease can cause high fever, diarrhea, loss of appetite and vomiting, and if not treated promptly can cause dehydration.

Tips for you: Maintain cleanliness, drink lots of clean water, wash your hands before consuming food or drink

8. Scabies (Scabies)
Scabies is a very contagious skin disease caused by infection with Sarcoptes scabiei, a small parasite that burrows and lays eggs in the skin. This disease can also be transmitted through direct skin contact or sexual contact. These lice cause severe itching and allergic reactions characterized by small bumps and red blisters.

Tips for you: Avoid prolonged contact with infected people. Wash the clothes, sheets and towels used.

9. Colds
Although colds are infections caused by various types of viruses, research reveals that these viruses multiply rapidly in cold conditions. This is the reason why more people catch coughs and colds in the rainy season and if these become severe, patients can suffer from more serious infections including bronchitis, ear infections and sinusitis.

10. Fungal Infection -
Athlete's Foot Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that causes itching and ringworm. It is characterized by a red, scaly rash and is usually between the toes but can also infect the hands, nails and groin. This disease can also be caused by frequently wearing wet socks or tight shoes and wading through flood water. Treatment Athlete's foot can be treated with antifungal medications.

Tips for you: Keep your feet dry, change socks regularly, wear alternate shoes and wear light and well-ventilated shoes.
